The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus Essay Christopher Marlowe, in his play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, examines the renaissance spirit that aims for secular and materialistic knowledge, and explores its affinity with magic. In our modern era secular knowledge has lost all its associations with magic, and this makes it difficult for modern audiences to appreciate the concerns of Marlowe. Magic has been reduced to a quaint and harmless superstition for most, and therefore the heretic’s heroic pursuit of it, or the Church’s severe condemnation and suppression of it, either has ceased to make any sense. The Bible, indeed most religious scriptures, severely proscribes magic, and paints it as the most serious threat to civilization. This contrasts with the modern attitude in which magic is only meaningless chants and redundant amulets with no efficacy whatsoever. In the original context of the play magic was seen as an active scourge, and was believed to be a way to knowledge that shunned the path of God. The connection between magic and secular learning is revived throughout the play. On several occasions we find Faustus faulting his books for his downfall: â€Å"O, would I had never seen Wittenberg, / never read book! † In his last desperate attempt to gain redemption from the clutches of Lucifer he offers to burn his books. In recent times such knowledge is called materialistic, and at times condemned as such. However, rarely is such knowledge associated with black magic. In Marlowe’s time conceptions were radically different. Indeed all the great pioneers in the renaissance of learning knew the nature of the task they undertook. When Roger Bacon submitted to the Pope his elaborate blueprint aimed at a fundamental new direction in learning – the Opus Majus – he coined the term â€Å"white magic† for it. Christian doctrine taught that magic was a black art, because evil. Bacon explained to the pope that his new experimental way to learning, if properly guided by the authorities, such as the Vatican itself, would not harm, but instead improve society. Bacon stated intention was to â€Å"better demonstrate the inferiority and indignity of Magical power to that of Nature or Art†. Despite Bacon’s optimism, the suspicion that the rise of secular knowledge was releasing into Christian Europe the seven deadly sins was slow to fade. When Goethe retold the Faust story in the early nineteenth century he still held that the protagonist was making a pact with the devil, but added a crucial difference to the ending, where Faust is not subject to eternal damnation after all. But then the biblical doctrine of original sin confronts Faustus squarely. If it is in the nature of man to sin, and by sinning he meets eternal death and damnation, then the doctrine of predestination is meaningless, he thinks: â€Å"What doctrine call you this, Che sera, sera, What will be, shall be? † By refuting religion in the end, Faustus is left at the doors of magic. It promises riches, power and dominion over world, and meets exactly the needs of a soaring ambition that is sated with mere learning for learning’s sake. A sound magician is a demigod,† he expresses. In this way Faustus has come to the logical conclusion of secular knowledge, the aim of which he professes at the beginning, to â€Å"level at the end of every art†. In the process has made clear the link between the spirit of the renaissance and magic. This is why the play is truly a tragedy, and not merely a morality play that teaches the wages of sin. After this soliloquy and Faustus has finally chosen the path of magic, the rest of the play is merely a drawn out dramatization of the inevitable fall. The only remaining tension is in the mind of the protagonist, as it vacillates between moving ahead into the kingdom of Lucifer, and turning back with repentance to God. In fact the latter is not an option at all, which Mephistopheles and Lucifer remind him times over, and he finds out on his own whenever to tries to repent: â€Å"My heart is hardend, I cannot repent; / Scarce can I name salvation, faith, or heaven. † He has sold his soul to the devil with a pact signed in blood, which signifies none other than that he has committed himself to the path of magic. He is damned and destined for an eternity in hell. The 24 years granted by Lucifer is his perdition. They are expended in exercise of meaningless powers over kings and emperors, and a tormenting vacillation between heaven and hell. The latter is in fact the only dynamic in the play after the pact signed in blood. It is the tension of what might have been and what is. The last glimmer of hope for Faustus is when his blood congeals before the pact is signed with it, signifying that the body is resisting that which the mind has already yielded to. But Mephistopheles brings in fire to keep the blood warm and running, and the final disaster is completed. A further dynamic in the play is the realization of the ultimate futility of magic. Faustus has been granted worldly power and glory, by which he impresses and wins favors of kings and princes. But they turn out to be meaningless to him in the end, just as meaningless as his prior accomplishments in the fields of metaphysics, medicine and law. He is quickly sated with his new found powers, and ends up just as dissatisfied as prior to selling his soul. He is tortured by pangs of remorse, and begins to think the glories of heaven far superior. By degrees Faustus is made to learn what hell really is. His first shock is to learn that hell is not really an old wives’ tale after all. In answer to Faustus’ suspicion Mephistopheles interjects, â€Å"But I am an instance to prove the contrary, / For I tell thee I am damnd and now in hell. † Faustus wants to learn more about hell. The first response he gets that it is under heaven. He urges for clarity and Mephistopheles responds: Within the bowels of these elements, Where we are torturd and remain for ever: Hell hath no limits, nor is circumscribd In one self-place; but where we are is hell, And where hell is, there must we ever be: And, to be short, when all the world dissolves, And every creature shall be purified, All places shall be hell that are not heaven. In this description hell is clearly identified with materialistic knowledge and pursuits. â€Å"Within the bowels of these elements† is exactly where materialistic knowledge is sought. The materialistic world order is indeed painted as permanent and indifferent. Against this Mephistopheles points out that the present order will be dissolved and all living souls purified. The materialists stubbornly resist any suggestion that there could be a transcendence beyond empirical world. But Mephistopheles confirms that there is an â€Å"Above†, and after the dissolution and the purification of souls, all places are hell, except for where the transcendental souls reside – i. e. in heaven. By clinging to the lowly elements, through the illusory promise of magic, Faustus has indeed chosen hell as his eternal abode. Doctor Faustus is thoroughly imbued with the spirit of the renaissance, and it is only his overarching enthusiasm for it that leads to his fall. This is why he is a truly tragic figure, and the contemporary audience of Marlowe’s time would certainly have appreciated this fact. Modern audiences will tend not to sympathize with the protagonist, but what is even more shocking is that a large part will be left indifferent. Those of a religious temperament will judge that anyone who consorts with the devil deserves eternal damnation, and will probably fail to appreciate that Faustus was moved by nothing other than a tremendous spirit of learning borne of the Renaissance. The larger part, on the other hand, does not believe in hell at all, and will merely express indignation that so much suffering be heaped on one who dabbles in a few charms, and did no one any harm. Coffee was treated differently than sugar and rubber in the nineteenth century Age of Empire because its low technological demands meant that an independent country richly endowed with the factors of production, Brazil, could begin producing on an unprecedented scale. Cheap fertile land and slave labor allowed coffee prices to plummet after 1820 and remain low until the last quarter of the century creating supply-induced demand. Brazil’s exports jumped 75 fold between independence in 1822 and 1899. World consumption grew more than 15 fold in the nineteenth century. Consumers were not very price conscious because they were long buffered from recognizing the price. If they drank in cafes, they were unaware of the type of coffee they were drinking. As the price of one sort rose, cafe owners often blended in cheaper substitute grades rather than raise their price. he same seems to have been true for grocers. Rather than risk losing their clientele, they competed on blends, not on price. They also sought to keep prices constant. Price rises were often not passed on to the consumer. Instead, cheaper blends were used or grocers reduced their profit margin. Moreover, as coffee sipping became customary and even habit-forming, it was transformed into a necessity for many. As a result, coffee in the twentieth century became price and income inelastic. Thus we are presented with the irony that the international coffee market at the turn of the twentieth century, one of the world’s largest commodity markets, was relatively price inelastic (within in a reasonably large range) at both the production and the consumption end, though profit-driven commercial and industrial intermediaries were extremely conscious of price. In other words, it was quite imperfect. The Philippine Coffee Company (PCC) says the first coffee tree was introduced in Lipa, Batangas, in 1740 by a Spanish Franciscan monk and soon spread to neighboring towns of Ibaan, Lemery, San Jose, Taal, and Tanauan. â€Å"Batangas owed much of its wealth to the coffee plantations in these areas and Lipa eventually became the coffee capital of the Philippines. We are one of the few countries that produces the four varieties of commercially viable coffee: Arabica, Liberica (Barako), Excelsa, and Robusta. This is attributed to the country’s climate and soil ranging from the lowlands of southern Luzon to the mountain ranges of the Cordillera and Mindanao. â€Å"In 1880, the Philippines was the fourth largest exporter of coffee beans, and when the coffee rust hit Brazil, Africa, and Java, it became the only source of coffee beans worldwide,† PCC says. Singh has been suffering from certain health issues like- cerebrovascular accidents, right-sided hemiplegia, right sided dysphagia and right sided dysphasia.Cerebrovascular diseases are the sudden death of brain cells when they face deficit of oxygen and the blood flowing to the brain is impaired by blockage or rupturing of any artery to the brain. Cerebrovascular accidents are often referred to as the stroke (Bobath., 2009). The symptoms of this disease include weak face muscles, speech problems, weakness and paralysis of one side of the body which may lead to complete loss of movement. The right hemiplegia is described as paralysis of a right side of the body. This disease is caused as after effect of the cerebrovascular disease. The principal diagnosis of this disease is the cerebrovascular disease with the infraction (Wagner-Sonntag Prosiegel., 2014). Hemiplegia is always opposite of the brain cells as the nerve fibers cross over on the opposite side in the medulla oblongata. This helps in connecting the spinal cord to the brain. Dysphagia is referred as difficulty in swallowing any liquid material or any solid material. Liquid matters, including saliva seem very hard to swallow. Dysphasia is difficulty with language or speech disorders. This is the condition when the patient loses the ability to express thoughts by speaking, writing (Vaclavik et al., 2015). There are two kinds of dysphasia which may be receptive or expressive. In simple words, it can be defined as difficulty in comprehension and difficulty in saying. 2. (a) The three modified food textures that are recommended for the patient are- B = thin puree dysphagia diet C = thick puree dysphagia diet D = pre- mashed dysphagia diet E =fork mashable dysphagia diet As the patient has been suffering from dysphagia, she is advised by the doctors to have texture modified foods. It is recommended as she has been facing difficulty in swallowing even liquid foods and thus she is advised to have soft foods (Gulanick Myers., 2013). She may also face difficulty in aspiration of foods into the lungs. This kind of foods is generally prescribed by the speech and language therapist to help the patient in overcoming the problems of eating. (b) The strategies that can be adopted for the patient to help her in assisting food are- Giving the patient foods in a slow manner so that she can eat every bite of food and chew it properly (Stemple Hapner., 2014) Allowing her to chew and sip each bite for 5 10 seconds Checking the patient for pouching. As she has been suffering from hemiplagia, her head should be tilted slightly for avoiding pouching. The patient should be kept upright all the time during and before eating. Enteral tube feeding can be equally helpful for patients who are unable to meet their nutritional needs orally (Namdari et al., 2012). Rinsing the pouch under water and keeping the wastes into plastic disposal bags. Wrapping it in the newspaper bags and placing it in ordinary plastic bags (Kawai et al., 2016). The used pouch can be directly put into the disposal bag if not emptied. After all these processes are done, the disposal bags are to be dumped into the domestic refusal bag. 5. (a) Extrinsic and intrinsic factors are present that helps in the formation of pressure areas. The intrinsic areas are- the disposing factors like limited movement, lack of proper diet, aging of the skin (Bos et al., 2016). The extrinsic factors are- pressure, stress, friction, moisture, and shear. The position of the patient determines the pressure applied to the joints which may cause pressure in ulcers. 7.(b) Decubitus ulcers are also called as pressure ulcers. These are local injuries or harms to the skin, which occur in the tissue, which usually occurs over a bony prominence and evolves due to the pressure in combination with shear or friction (Bos et al., 2016). The common sites are- skin of sacrum, coccyx, heels, hips and elbows, knee skin. 7.(c) The strategies adopted for preventing the patient from this pressure problem are- timely risk assessment to identify the risk factors involved, not moving the patient too much as this may cause more pressure, not moving her elbows and knees as this may cause more pain. Pressure injury sites should be determined and taken into focus by the nurses and multidisciplinary team members(Bos et al., 2016) . As the patient is now suffering from decubitus ulcer, she should not be lifted suddenly and should be provided with the cushion at her back as this may help her in reducing pain while movements. She should be given wheelchair for more assistance and should not be placed from one place to another several times as this will increase pain. Healing can be done by applying dressings on moist wounds, cleaning her open sores with saline solutions and removing of damaged tissues by surgical debridement. Pain can be managed by giving proper antibiotics and healthy nutritional diet.(Singh et al., 2015). 7.(d) The risk assessment involved in the case scenario are- the Norton scale, the Braden scale and the Water low scale. The Norton scale was found to be the best as it gives complete analysis of patients physical, mental conditions along with mobility and activities(Bos et al., 2016). 8.(a) The patients poor sleep is due to certain factors like- Mobility problems due to pain in the broken bone and brain damage Poor nutrition due to difficulty in eating, difficulty in engulfing fluids in the body Declining health conditions due to problems in pressure areas in skin, knees and elbows. Mental health conditions are deteriorating due to the several problems faced by the patient. Difficulty in sleeping can also be because of paralysis of her right side. 8.(b) Nurses need to advise patients to avoid frequent movements as this can cause pain. The patient is suffering from pressure ulcers so, is advised to take complete rest and avoid mobility (Bos et al., 2016). The patient should be advised not to move out of the bed and should avoid standing and moving her hands and elbows. Giving the patient appropriate antibiotics and rest and assistance can help in promoting sleeping. 9. An advance health care directive is also referred to as living will or personal directive. It is in the form of legal documents that contains the necessary actions adopted for the betterment of a person's health when they are not in a condition to improve their health conditions as they are ill. 10. The patient can be told to do the actions which they want to take. The patient is advised by the speech therapist to be in resting position and is advised not to move without the help of any family member. Advising her to follow the instructions as given by the speech therapist and doctors (Burns et al., 2016).
